Subnautica 2 studio isn’t backing down on fish murder, but you can at least stun them now thanks to game’s first major update

Unknown Worlds has released Subnautica 2’s first major update, version 1.1 called “Adaptive Measures,” introducing defensive options against aggressive marine life. While the developer has maintained that the game is not designed around combat or killing creatures, the update adds the ability to stun fish and other life forms, providing players with a new defensive mechanic they have been requesting since launch.

The update focuses on creature mechanics improvements, with most creatures now featuring improved flinch animations that provide visual feedback when hit with the Survival Multitool. Additionally, the patch introduces new Biolab locations for early-game exploration, expands the biomods system to allow multiple passive biomods simultaneously, and enables creature scanning to unlock additional biomod slots later in gameplay.

Since its May launch in early access, Subnautica 2 has achieved significant commercial success, selling one million copies within its first hour and surpassing four million sales to date. Player feedback has consistently requested combat capabilities against hostile marine life, though Unknown Worlds has remained firm in its design philosophy against lethal combat mechanics.

The developer has announced further updates planned for the roadmap. Version 1.2 will introduce proximity chat and player revive functionality to enhance the multiplayer experience, while the upcoming Early Access 2 update will bring substantial new content including a new oceanic region, additional creatures, vehicle chassis options, progression systems, and story elements.
