Feature: “We really squeezed the PS5 as much as we could”: Ubisoft talks tech on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced

Ubisoft has revealed that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced represents a comprehensive technical overhaul rather than a simple remaster. In an interview with Digital Foundry, technical director Jussi Markkanen and technical architect Nicolas Lopez discussed how the development team optimized the 13-year-old game for PlayStation 5.

Lopez stated that the team has “really squeezed the PS5 as much as we could,” fully utilizing the console’s hardware capabilities. The developers indicated that extracting additional performance from current-generation consoles would be “very difficult,” suggesting the remake pushes the PS5 to its technical limits. They acknowledged that creating further optimizations for the next mainline Assassin’s Creed title would require significant additional effort or potentially wait for new console hardware.

The ground-up reimagining transforms the classic game into a modern graphical showcase, representing what the development team considers the maximum achievable performance on PlayStation 5’s current architecture. This comprehensive technical approach distinguishes it from typical remasters and demonstrates Ubisoft’s commitment to leveraging console hardware capabilities for enhanced visuals and performance.
