After 15 Years, inFAMOUS 2’s Online Features Are Coming to an End
After 15 years of service, inFAMOUS 2 is losing its online capabilities. The PlayStation 3 superhero action game’s community-driven features are being shut down, ending players’ ability to create and share custom missions—a feature that extended the game’s lifespan well beyond its single-player campaign.
While inFAMOUS 2 is primarily known as a single-player experience following Cole MacGrath’s story, the online mission creation system offered significant replay value. Players could design their own missions and share them with the community, allowing others to experience new content long after the base game’s release. This user-generated content ecosystem helped keep the game’s community engaged throughout its lifecycle.
The shutdown marks another challenge in game preservation for online-dependent titles. As servers age and maintenance costs accumulate, publishers regularly retire online services for older games, potentially rendering features and content inaccessible to future players. Countless community-created missions will no longer be accessible, and future players will lose this dimension of the experience.
inFAMOUS 2 released in 2011 and became a notable PlayStation exclusive. The decision to maintain online features for over a decade demonstrates a long-tail commitment from the publisher, though the eventual sunset is inevitable as hardware ages and player bases shrink. This closure underscores the fragility of online gaming experiences and the importance of preserving offline-playable games.
