Eurogamer and VG247 veterans launch new independent site

Former editors and writers from Eurogamer, VG247, and RPG Site have launched Respec, a new independent media outlet dedicated to video game coverage and criticism.

The venture is led by co-founders Tom Orry (editor in chief) and Alex Donaldson (publisher), alongside editor Mikhail Madnani, contributor Rebecca Jones, and a network of freelance writers. The team directly challenges the prevailing industry assumption that traditional gaming journalism can only survive within large media conglomerates.

In their announcement, the founders stated that significant audience demand exists for quality gaming content that captures the distinctive editorial voice and tone of classic gaming magazines, rather than the standardized approach of mega-sites. Respec aims to appeal to both longtime readers nostalgic for traditional gaming media and younger audiences discovering that style for the first time.

The launch reflects ongoing industry tensions, as the games media landscape has consolidated significantly in recent years with major outlets absorbed into larger corporate structures. By establishing themselves independently, the Respec team hopes to demonstrate that reader-supported and advertising-supported gaming journalism remains economically viable outside traditional mega-site frameworks.
