Rarest PS1 and PS2 games to buy before Sony closes the PlayStation Store
Sony announced on July 7 that it will shut down the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita systems. The closure will begin in August 2026 in select regions and conclude worldwide by July 2027, giving players approximately one year to purchase digital versions of classic games before they become unavailable.
The announcement has prompted renewed interest in acquiring rare and valuable PS1 and PS2 titles from the digital storefront, as digital editions typically cost significantly less than their physical counterparts. The PlayStation Store maintains a diverse catalog of classic games for these legacy systems, including numerous costly JRPG classics that command premium prices on the secondhand market.
One advantage of purchasing digital versions is that save files are designed to mimic the functionality of original memory cards, allowing players to experience these classic titles in a manner comparable to playing on original hardware. This preservation opportunity comes at a time when physical copies of rare PlayStation games have become increasingly expensive and difficult to obtain, making the digital store a valuable resource for collectors and enthusiasts looking to build comprehensive libraries of classic gaming titles before the store’s permanent closure.
