Microsoft is making Windows 11’s search box 4 whole pixels taller for some reason

Microsoft is making a minor but visually noticeable adjustment to Windows 11’s interface by increasing the height of the search box by 4 pixels. The change affects the search box component that appears both on the Taskbar and in the Start menu, making it more prominent and visibly “chunkier” on screen.

While 4 pixels may seem trivial, Microsoft has demonstrated through before-and-after comparisons that the adjustment is distinctly noticeable to users. The taller search box now sits closer to the top edge of the Taskbar and causes Start menu content to shift downward slightly, occupying more vertical space in both locations.

The modification was revealed somewhat accidentally by Microsoft through leaked interface screenshots. The company indicated the change will roll out to Windows 11 users in the coming weeks as part of its ongoing refinements to the operating system’s user experience. This represents another iteration in Microsoft’s strategy of making incremental UI adjustments to improve Windows 11, even when individual changes are relatively small. The company appears to be fine-tuning the visual hierarchy and spacing of its core interface elements based on user feedback or internal design assessments.
