WoW’s game director thinks its UI overhaul has been ‘successful so far,’ even if it’s ’not perfect’
World of Warcraft’s game director Ion Hazzikostas has defended the Midnight expansion’s controversial UI overhaul, which restricted addon access to combat-related information. Blizzard implemented these restrictions with the explicit goal of simplifying gameplay and reducing player dependency on complex third-party modifications that many considered essential for competitive play.
Hazzikostas stated that the new UI system “has been successful so far,” though he acknowledged “it’s not perfect.” The change sparked significant controversy because many veteran players had become accustomed to extensively modded UIs displaying numerous combat metrics and information layers—described as making the game look like “an airplane dashboard designed by a drunk person.” Blizzard’s design philosophy was to ensure players shouldn’t feel compelled to install addons just to achieve functional gameplay.
While the company maintained exceptions to restrictions for certain use cases, the core limitation on combat-related UI modifications remains part of Midnight’s vision. Hazzikostas expressed confidence in the direction, stating “Things will only continue to get better from here.” The decision reflects a broader design philosophy balancing accessibility of the base game against the depth that addon communities have traditionally provided.
