After 2 years, Marvel Rivals finally made one of its worst characters one of its best
Marvel Rivals’ Black Widow character has finally received a major overhaul in season 9, addressing long-standing concerns about her viability and design fit within the hero shooter. Since the game’s December 2024 launch, Black Widow had occupied an awkward role that poorly reflected her character background and contributed little to the overall roster diversity.
The rework, deployed on July 10 alongside Jubilee’s addition to the cast, fundamentally reimagines Black Widow’s kit by promoting her aim-down-sights sniper functionality from a core ability to her ultimate ability with significant upgrades. While scoped shots remain unable to eliminate enemies with a single headshot, the new iteration delivers substantially more damage and improved accuracy. NetEase enhanced the sniper mode by increasing hitbox sizes for scoped shots and adding piercing functionality that allows bullets to pass through multiple enemies.
This transformation marks a significant departure from Black Widow’s previous design philosophy and represents NetEase’s commitment to ongoing character balance adjustments. The rework has successfully repositioned Black Widow as a compelling gameplay option rather than a liability, with players reporting the character is now enjoyable to play.
The update reflects the iterative nature of live-service game development, where characters can receive substantial redesigns based on player feedback and performance data. As Marvel Rivals continues evolving through its seasonal content model, such adjustments help maintain roster viability and ensure all characters offer meaningful gameplay contributions.
