This Developer Wants You to Pay Less for PS5 Survival Horror
The Sinking City 2 will launch on PS5 in August at $49.99 (£41.35), undercutting the typical $60+ price point of most premium survival horror games. Developer Frogwares announced the pricing strategy while opening pre-orders on the PlayStation Store, positioning it as a consumer-friendly decision designed to expand accessibility.
Publishing director Sergiy Oganesyan explained the rationale: “While most survival horror games today launch at $60 or more, we’re launching at $49.99 because we want to be fair and give as many people as possible the chance to step into Arkham with us.”
The decision represents a notable counter-trend in an industry where AAA releases typically command premium launch prices. By pricing The Sinking City 2 below its primary competitors in the survival horror genre, Frogwares is betting that increased volume and player goodwill may compensate for reduced per-unit revenue. This strategy could help the game reach a broader audience and distinguish itself in a competitive market segment, while reflecting the studio’s stated commitment to player value propositions.
