Activision Confirms Black Ops 1 & 2 Crossplay and Matchmaking Mechanics

Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 launched on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 as digital-only releases, rekindling interest in the classic first-person shooters. However, the releases were marred by immediate confusion regarding the games’ matchmaking mechanics and crossplay functionality.

Players expressed uncertainty about whether cross-generation matchmaking was supported between PS4 and PS5 versions. Adding to the confusion, some users reported an apparent bug where players who owned season passes were unable to matchmake with those without the passes, creating a fragmented player pool and frustrating the community.

Activision has since clarified the situation through an official announcement, confirming that cross-generation play is indeed available. PS4 and PS5 players can matchmake with one another, ensuring a unified player base across both PlayStation generations. The company also addressed the season pass issue, though details on whether this was resolved as a bug fix or represents intended functionality remain limited based on the available information.

The remastered releases represent a significant moment for game preservation, allowing a new generation of players to access these influential titles while ensuring existing fans can continue enjoying the multiplayer experiences that defined the franchise during earlier console generations.
