Nintendo officially ending a Mario Kart is a terrible sign for millions of gamers

Nintendo’s approach to Mario Kart availability on Switch 2 highlights ongoing concerns about digital game preservation. Of nine major console entries in the series, only five are currently accessible on the platform: the classic trilogy (Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, and Super Mario Kart: Super Circuit) through Nintendo Classics, alongside recent releases Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart World.

Notably absent from Switch 2 are the mid-period entries: Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Wii, and Mario Kart 7. While used physical copies of these games remain available for their original hardware, Nintendo’s decision to neither continue digital distribution nor re-release these titles represents a significant gap in the franchise’s legacy on modern platforms. The presumed future addition of GameCube’s Mario Kart: Double Dash!! to Nintendo Classics would only partially address this preservation problem.

This pattern reflects broader industry challenges regarding game availability and archival, as publishers often discontinue digital storefronts for older titles without providing modern alternatives. For millions of players seeking to experience the full Mario Kart lineage on current hardware, significant portions of the franchise remain inaccessible, underscoring the vulnerability of digital gaming libraries to publisher decisions.
