Warframe’s next major update blends Blade Runner, The Sopranos, and film noir in a whole new solar system, coming later this year

Digital Extremes unveiled Warframe: Tau at TennoCon 2026, the long-awaited second solar system for the sci-fi shooter. The expansion introduces players to the Tau system and its ringed city of Fornax, a noir-inspired locale drawing aesthetic and thematic inspiration from Blade Runner, The Sopranos, and classic film noir.

Fornax is depicted as a corrupted, rain-plagued city where inhabitants suffer from addiction to a substance called Bloom. The expansion explores themes of addiction and its societal consequences, positioning it as a thematically darker entry in Warframe’s universe.

The update introduces Brysko, a new noir-themed detective Warframe voiced by Critical Role’s Matt Mercer. Armed with gauntlets designed for swift close-range combat, Brysko takes center stage in demo missions through Fornax, including confrontations with Hunra, the Sentient ruler of Tau. Players will also have access to a casino and other locations within the city.

Complementing the expansion, Digital Extremes is adding Fables & Frontiers, a permanent Dungeons & Dragons-inspired minigame to the game’s Hex location. The feature fulfills a plot point from the 1999 expansion, allowing character Amir to finally play the fantasy tabletop game with his companions.

Additionally, Banshee, one of Warframe’s oldest playable Warframes from 2013, is receiving a mechanical overhaul to modernize her sound-based abilities and crowd control kit for the current game’s fast-paced gameplay style.

Warframe: Tau is scheduled to release later in 2026, continuing Digital Extremes’ 13-year expansion of the game beyond its original methodical shooter origins into an increasingly complex space opera.
