Sakumon is the Latest Pokémon-Like Game That Might Get Nintendo’s Attention

Sakumon, a new monster-collecting game, has launched on mobile platforms with a toys-to-life twist. Players collect physical figurines that link to their devices, unlocking corresponding creatures in-game. The game borrows heavily from Pokémon’s design philosophy, featuring rare shiny variants, three type-based starter creatures (water, earth, and fire), and a monster-battling core loop.

Beyond monster collection, Sakumon incorporates island exploration and customization mechanics reminiscent of Animal Crossing, allowing players to develop their own personalized space alongside creature collection.

The game’s design draws clear parallels to Pokémon, raising intellectual property concerns. This comes as Nintendo has recently pursued legal action against Palworld, another monster-collecting title. Given Sakumon’s explicit mimicry of Pokémon’s core mechanics and aesthetic—from type systems to shiny variants—Nintendo may similarly seek to defend its monster-collection intellectual property.

The toys-to-life monetization model adds a physical component to the free-to-play mobile game, generating revenue through tangible product sales alongside digital purchases. This hybrid approach differentiates Sakumon from purely digital competitors while maintaining familiar monster-collecting gameplay loops proven successful across the industry.
