AI did a surprisingly good job with designing a rack for three Framework mainboards

David Soria Parra, a member of technical staff at Anthropic, successfully used Claude Fable to design a compact 3D-printable rack for three Framework mainboards. Framework mainboards are the removable, processor-bearing circuit boards that power Framework’s modular laptops, available as standalone components. The rack accommodates all three boards in a three-tray configuration, demonstrating that AI excels at practical hardware design tasks.

The three mainboards could be repurposed for various applications, including multi-PC setups, server configurations, or other specialized computing projects. The successful design showcases a practical and non-wasteful application of AI technology, moving beyond speculative use cases to solve real engineering challenges.

This project highlights growing confidence in AI’s ability to handle tangible design work, particularly in 3D modeling and engineering where precision and spatial reasoning are critical. It reflects how AI tools are becoming integrated into professional workflows at leading technology organizations, and demonstrates that AI can deliver measurable value in hardware design beyond traditional software development tasks.
