Despite having an offline mode, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced was unplayable when Ubisoft Connect went down
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced achieved major commercial success with 2 million sales on its launch day and solid critical reception. However, the game’s offline mode claim was undermined over the weekend when Ubisoft Connect, the publisher’s DRM and social platform, experienced an outage that rendered the game unplayable on PC.
Despite advertising offline functionality, the game fundamentally depends on Ubisoft Connect to operate across all platforms. On PC specifically, Ubisoft Connect functions as both a DRM layer and authentication mechanism, requiring a one-time internet connection to verify game ownership at launch. When the service went offline, players could not access the game even though offline mode was supposed to enable gameplay without internet connectivity.
This incident exposes a persistent contradiction in modern game distribution: the gap between advertised offline capabilities and actual functionality. Ubisoft’s offline mode proves insufficient when the underlying infrastructure becomes unavailable, essentially rendering the offline feature moot. The outage underscores broader industry concerns about digital game ownership and player autonomy in an increasingly service-dependent ecosystem. It highlights how players depend on publisher infrastructure rather than owning games outright, and raises questions about game preservation and long-term playability when online services eventually shut down.
