Buffy the Vampire Slayer officially returns in one month, but there’s a catch
After the cancellation of the Hulu revival series Buffy: New Sunnydale in March, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise will return in a new format: a comic book series launching August 19. The iconic television series, created by Joss Whedon and starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, had been set to continue on streaming with Gellar reprising her role as Buffy Summers under showrunner Chloé Zhao, but the project was ultimately shelved despite a finished pilot episode being completed.
Instead, the franchise will pivot to comics, a medium that has maintained the Buffy universe through various series over the years. The new comic will be written by Kelly Thompson, known for Absolute Wonder Woman, and illustrated by Stephen Byrne. This move represents a different path forward for the beloved vampire-slaying franchise following the streaming cancellation.
While fans had anticipated a television revival reuniting the original cast, the shift to sequential art keeps the Buffy narrative active in the entertainment landscape. The comic book medium has proven a reliable outlet for continuing the franchise’s story and universe when traditional television development encounters obstacles.
