Dragon’s Dogma 2 devs on the big fast travel U-turn, and wanting to “win back the trust” of RPG fans with the Dark Arisen DLC
Dragon’s Dogma 2 received critical acclaim upon launch, but player reception focused heavily on the game’s notorious technical performance issues rather than its unique hardcore systems. More than two years after its release, Capcom is taking action to address player concerns and restore confidence in the franchise.
The studio is rolling out major updates alongside a new expansion called Dark Arisen, arriving in October. Producer Naoto Oyama and director Kenta Kinoshita have reflected on the original launch and are implementing significant quality-of-life improvements designed to broaden the game’s appeal without compromising its core identity.
A key change addresses one of the most controversial aspects: the fast-travel system. An update has already introduced the Eternal Ferrystone item, which grants unlimited fast-travel capabilities—a dramatic shift from the original restrictive system. Additional Portcrystals have been placed throughout the world, expanding fast-travel options further. The team has also committed to overhauling the Dragonsplague system, another source of player frustration.
The developers emphasize their philosophy: “Don’t impinge on the original experience, give the player more possibilities.” This approach aims to attract players who bounced off the base game while preserving what made Dragon’s Dogma 2 unique for its hardcore fanbase. With these changes and the Dark Arisen expansion, Capcom hopes to win back player trust and demonstrate their commitment to the franchise.
