EA removes microtransactions from EA Sports College Football 27 following backlash

EA Sports has removed all microtransactions from EA Sports College Football 27 following significant backlash from players and content creators. The developer acknowledged it “missed the mark” with the introduction of paid progression options ranging from $9.99 to $149.99.

The controversial microtransactions were available in Road to Glory and Online Dynasty modes, allowing players to instantly improve their coach or athlete by paying real money. Alternatively, players could earn progression through grinding, though this required substantial time investment.

What sparked particular outrage was that these paid progression options were not disclosed before the game’s launch and were absent from preview copies provided to content creators. This lack of transparency led to organized backlash, including a boycott movement using the hashtag #CFBPlayDontPay.

The Road to Glory and Online Dynasty modes had historically remained free from microtransactions in previous titles. While prior games included experience modifiers for faster progression, they were fundamentally different from the paid progression system introduced in CFB 27. In response to community feedback, EA announced it would remove all paid progression options from both modes, reverting to a non-transactional progression system.
