The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum Will Use AI to De-Age Some of Its Characters
Andy Serkis, director and star of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, has confirmed that the film will employ artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to digitally de-age some of its returning cast members. The prequel to the original Lord of the Rings trilogy will feature reprises from Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf), who last appeared in these roles over 25 years ago.
Serkis revealed in an interview with Variety that de-aging technology will be used selectively throughout the film, though he did not specify which actors would receive the treatment. He emphasized that the use of AI is limited to de-aging processes and that the production does not employ generative AI, distinguishing the approach from other recent entertainment projects that have drawn controversy over AI usage.
Digital de-aging is not new to cinema, having been utilized in various productions to make older actors appear younger. However, the application to major returning cast members in a high-profile franchise represents a significant use case for the technology, addressing the practical challenge of maintaining visual consistency with the actors’ appearances in the original films while accommodating their natural aging.
