Steam Machine compatibility checks are here, though not every game on the store enjoys a rating
Valve has launched Steam Machine compatibility information on the Steam store, allowing users to check whether games will run on Valve’s hardware and SteamOS directly from game store pages. The feature provides a detailed breakdown of compatibility across different Valve platforms and software, operating similarly to the existing Steam Deck compatibility ratings that have been available for some time.
Following the Steam Machine’s June release, this compatibility tool addresses a key need for potential buyers and current owners looking to determine which games from their libraries will work on the hardware. Users can access this information by clicking a “learn more” option next to each game’s compatibility rating on its store page.
However, not all games currently have compatibility ratings available, suggesting Valve is still working through its database to evaluate titles. The company has indicated it is “still learning” about compatibility requirements, particularly for older games that may present unexpected challenges. This ongoing evaluation process means some games, especially legacy titles, may not yet have official compatibility information available.
The rollout represents a significant step toward transparency in game compatibility, helping consumers make informed purchasing decisions. The Steam Machine, positioned as Valve’s gaming hardware alternative to traditional consoles, can now be evaluated against users’ existing game libraries before purchase. As Valve continues to test and rate older games, more titles are expected to receive compatibility assessments over time.
