Steam Machine overheating: Valve confirms warning showing too early, BIOS fix coming soon

The Steam Machine, Valve’s dedicated gaming PC device, is experiencing early issues with temperature warnings triggering prematurely on units in the hands of early users. According to reports, some users have observed the device’s high-temperature warning system activating when not warranted, causing unnecessary concerns about hardware stability.

Valve has confirmed the issue and identified the root cause: the temperature warning thresholds are configured to activate at 95°C for the CPU and 90°C for the GPU, but the current firmware is triggering these alerts too early. The company has announced that a BIOS update will be released to address the problem and recalibrate the warning system.

This marks one of the few notable issues to emerge during the Steam Machine’s early access phase, following an earlier incident where incorrect error code translations caused a user to mistakenly believe their GPU had failed. Otherwise, early reception has been relatively problem-free, suggesting Valve’s hardware design has been largely sound through initial testing phases.
