Tom Cruise Says Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s ‘Totally Original’ Digger Is Unlike Any Film He’s Ever Made

Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu is releasing a new film titled Digger, starring Tom Cruise in the lead role. The film is described as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions” and marks the first collaboration between the acclaimed director and the Hollywood star, despite both expressing mutual admiration and a desire to work together since the early 2000s.

In Digger, Cruise plays the titular character Digger Rockwell, a wealthy billionaire tycoon whose oil drilling operations inadvertently trigger a global environmental catastrophe. The plot centers on Rockwell’s journey from indifference to the planetary damage he has caused—including melting polar ice caps that threaten trillions of dollars in losses—to ultimately becoming instrumental in preventing disaster.

The film’s first full trailer reveals Cruise in one of his least recognizable roles, transformed through extensive prosthetic makeup. Both the director and actor have emphasized that this project represents entirely new creative territory for each of them. The character has drawn comparisons to Cruise’s comedic performance in Tropic Thunder as Les Grossman, suggesting a significant departure from his typical action-hero roles.
