University Gives Students Up to $15K in Scholarships for Rare Gaming Achievements

The University of Silicon Valley has launched an unconventional scholarship program that recognizes and rewards students for demonstrating exceptional gaming proficiency. The “Max Achievement Scholarship” awards up to $15,000 to students who can verify they’ve earned rare, specific in-game achievements across a diverse range of titles.

Unlike traditional esports scholarships that typically focus on competitive multiplayer games or academic game development programs, USV’s initiative takes a broader approach by accepting evidence from multiple gaming genres. Eligible titles include massively multiplayer online role-playing games such as Final Fantasy XIV and Old School Runescape, roguelike games like Hades and Risk of Rain 2, and sandbox games including Minecraft, among many others.

The scholarship program represents a notable cultural shift in how educational institutions recognize and validate gaming expertise. By focusing on verifiable in-game achievements rather than competitive esports performance, the university is acknowledging the skill, dedication, and mastery required to accomplish rare milestones—whether in complex raid encounters, completion-based challenges, or solo player achievements.

The initiative has generated significant online attention, highlighting the growing legitimacy of gaming proficiency in academic contexts. The program broadens gaming scholarships beyond competitive multiplayer specialists to include students who excel in single-player, cooperative, and diverse gaming experiences, expanding the pool of recognized gaming talent within higher education.
