Even Destiny 2’s demise won’t save Rising

Destiny 2 has officially ended its live service with Bungie’s final content update arriving on June 9, 2026. The update included new modes and revamped existing content developed over the game’s decade-long lifespan before entering end-of-service phase. Following the update, Sony laid off nearly the entire Destiny 2 development team, effectively concluding support for the flagship live-service shooter.

With Destiny 2 now offline, Destiny: Rising—NetEase’s mobile title launched in 2025—has become the only active Destiny game available to players. However, despite being the sole entry point for Destiny fans seeking to continue their experience, Rising’s transition to primary Destiny product has failed to alleviate its financial struggles.

The exact player migration rate from Destiny 2 to Rising remains unclear, though observers suggest many players have opted to emulate the mobile game on PC rather than transitioning to mobile platforms. Despite potentially capturing displaced Destiny 2 players, Rising continues to face monetisation challenges that existed prior to its predecessor’s closure.

The situation reflects broader industry trends in live-service gaming, where major titles can rapidly become obsolete while successor projects struggle to consolidate their audience and establish financial viability.
