Despite adding an eternal fast travel stone, Dragon’s Dogma 2 director maintains you don’t have to use it: ‘It’s just you now have a third option’
Dragon’s Dogma 2 received a free update in June that introduced the Eternal Ferrystone, an unlimited fast travel item allowing players to teleport to previously assigned Portcrystals from the map. This addition addresses widespread criticism of the game’s notoriously cumbersome fast travel system.
The original Dragon’s Dogma 2 relied on ferrystones—consumable items that were difficult to obtain—making traversal across the large open world tedious and frustrating. Players frequently encountered hazards during journeys, such as enemy ambushes and environmental obstacles that derailed their progress. The Eternal Ferrystone directly addresses these pain points by providing reliable, unlimited fast travel.
However, the game’s director and producer have emphasized that this new feature is entirely optional. They’re framing the update as expanding player choice rather than altering the core design philosophy. According to their statements, players who prefer the original challenging journey system can continue ignoring the Ferrystone and experience the game as intended. The developers insist they’re “not forcing” players to use the convenience feature—it’s simply a third option alongside original ferrystones and ox cart travel.
This approach reflects ongoing gaming industry conversations about balancing intentional design difficulty with player accessibility and quality of life. The update arrives ahead of the Dark Arisen expansion, suggesting the developers are responding to player feedback while preserving their deliberately challenging design philosophy for those who value it.
