Dead Space Creator Glen Schofield Announces Retirement From Gaming Industry
Glen Schofield, the legendary game designer credited with creating Dead Space and The Callisto Protocol, has announced his retirement after 35 years in the gaming industry. In an emotional four-minute video posted to LinkedIn, Schofield reflected on his extensive career, thanking his family, colleagues, Electronic Arts, Activision, and the gaming community for their support throughout the decades.
Schofield’s career spans pivotal periods in gaming history. He began as an artist before climbing to producer at EA, where he contributed to high-profile franchises including James Bond and Lord of the Rings games. He co-founded Sledgehammer Games, served as vice president at both Visceral Games and Crystal Dynamics, and most recently as CEO of Striking Distance Studios.
In his retirement message, Schofield expressed gratitude for witnessing what he called “one of the greatest creative explosions in history,” acknowledging the remarkable talent and exceptional games produced over recent decades. He praised ongoing innovation in the industry despite current hardships.
Schofield had attempted in recent years to pitch Dead Space 4 to Electronic Arts, but those efforts were unsuccessful. His departure marks the end of an era for one of the industry’s most respected figures and prominent voices in horror and action game design.
