‘Millions of Gamers Value True Ownership’: PS5, PS4 Represented Half of All UK Physical Game Revenue in 2025
Despite the gaming industry’s steady shift toward digital distribution, physical games remain economically significant in the UK market. PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 titles accounted for approximately half of all UK physical game revenue in 2025, according to data cited by the Entertainment Retailer’s Association (ERA).
This continued revenue underscores enduring consumer demand for physical media, even as digital adoption accelerates. Recent financial data showed that digital downloads comprised 85% of PS5 and PS4 sales in the last quarter, yet physical games still represent a substantial portion of retail revenue for the region.
The ERA’s emphasis on these figures comes in response to Sony’s announced plans to discontinue manufacturing physical games for PlayStation platforms in January 2028. The trade group representing UK game retailers has predictably pushed back against this decision, arguing that millions of gamers continue to value the ownership and tangibility that physical media provides.
The tension between Sony’s digital-first strategy and retail demand highlights an ongoing divide in the gaming industry. While platform holders increasingly prioritize digital storefronts for their financial and operational benefits, physical game retailers contend that a significant consumer base continues to prefer owning physical copies rather than licensing digital versions.
