Report: Nintendo mulling Switch 2 OLED with Samsung Display panel
Nintendo is reportedly exploring plans for a Switch 2 OLED model, according to a report from ZDnet Korea citing industry sources. The new variant would feature a 1080p OLED display panel supplied by Samsung Display, representing an upgrade from the current Switch 2’s LCD screen. If approved, manufacturing would not begin before the end of 2027, with a potential 2028 launch — roughly three years after the LCD model’s release.
This strategy mirrors Nintendo’s successful approach with the original Switch, which received an OLED variant several years after its initial launch. However, the reported plans remain uncertain, with the primary obstacle being cost. OLED screens carry significantly higher manufacturing expenses than LCD panels, and those costs would likely translate to a consumer premium over the base Switch 2. Nintendo is reportedly concerned about whether customers would accept a price increase for improved display quality, which includes OLED’s characteristic deeper blacks and superior motion clarity.
While industry observers have long expected an OLED Switch 2 variant eventually, these early-stage reports indicate Nintendo is actively considering the option without yet committing to production.
