NY governor orders a pause on large AI data center construction, to ensure that ‘when companies succeed because of New York, New Yorkers succeed too’
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed an executive order imposing a year-long moratorium on new hyperscaler data center construction, affecting facilities that consume 50 megawatts or more of power. The pause provides state agencies time to develop comprehensive regulations addressing impacts from large-scale AI data center expansion.
The decision targets growing concerns about data center development in New York, including environmental strain from water consumption, depletion of natural resources, power grid stress that could increase utility bills, and community disruptions from noise and infrastructure demands. Governor Hochul emphasized her responsibility to ensure local communities benefit alongside companies that succeed through New York’s resources and infrastructure.
The moratorium reflects escalating tensions between technology companies’ rapid infrastructure expansion needs and state/local concerns about sustainability and quality of life impacts from industrial-scale data center development.
