Pathfinder 2e creators Paizo end partnership with Archives of Nethys, which offers most of the D&D alternative’s ruleset for free
Paizo, the developer of Pathfinder 2e, has ended its partnership with Archives of Nethys, a volunteer-maintained website providing free access to most of the tabletop RPG’s ruleset. Paizo cited the reason as Archives of Nethys “has not produced royalties” for the company.
Pathfinder 2e is known for its exceptionally free-to-play model. The complete ruleset—including additional classes, monsters, and expansions—is available online at no cost through platforms like Demiplane and Foundry VTT integration. Paizo primarily generates revenue through pre-written adventures and published books, which offer curated indexes and professional formatting unavailable in free online versions.
Archives of Nethys has served as a crucial community resource, providing an organized, searchable interface to Pathfinder 2e’s extensive free rules. The partnership’s termination raises questions about the future of free rules distribution for the system and reflects broader industry tensions between monetization strategies and player accessibility in the tabletop gaming space.
