The tiniest MMO

PointlessQuest is an intentionally miniature MMO developed as a side project by designer Gareth Williams, available exclusively on the Playdate handheld gaming device. The game presents a striking contrast to mainstream MMORPGs—while World of Warcraft reached a peak of 12 million concurrent subscriptions at its height, PointlessQuest achieved a peak of just 15 concurrent players on its launch day.

Despite its diminutive scale, the game has attracted a dedicated community of hardcore players who are actively progressing through the early game together. Williams has expressed enthusiasm about the grassroots support, stating that “The support from the community has been and continues to be amazing.” This positive reception highlights a growing interest in experimental and unconventional gaming experiences.

The development of PointlessQuest exemplifies how small independent developers can leverage unexpected platforms to create unique gaming experiences. The Playdate, known for its monochrome screen and compact form factor, is an unconventional choice for hosting a multiplayer online game, yet Williams has successfully implemented MMO mechanics on the device.

The project demonstrates that while MMO success is traditionally measured by subscriber counts and mainstream appeal, there remains a market for small-scale, experimental takes on established genres. PointlessQuest’s niche audience appears genuinely engaged, suggesting that specialized experiences on unexpected platforms can find their audience through authentic community building and creative game design.
