PUBG Is Finally Fixing One Of Its Biggest New Player Hurdles
PUBG: Battlegrounds is implementing significant updates designed to address one of live-service games’ most persistent challenges: attracting and retaining new players. Publisher Krafton Inc. has released Update 42.2, which overhauls the new player experience with a focus on accessible, structured onboarding.
The centerpiece of these improvements is a new Basic Training mode consisting of 17 chapters that guide players through essential mechanics. The curriculum progresses from foundational skills like movement and looting to more advanced concepts including combat techniques and Blue Zone survival—critical knowledge for players unfamiliar with battle royale gameplay. Throughout this training, an NPC partner accompanies players, providing contextual guidance to help them develop practical skills efficiently.
Beyond the training overhaul, Update 42.2 also introduces improved team communication features and new game modes. These additions reflect Krafton’s broader strategy to lower barriers to entry for new players while maintaining engagement for the existing player base. The update represents an acknowledgment that PUBG: Battlegrounds, having evolved over several years as a live-service title, needs robust systems to welcome newcomers into an increasingly complex game world.
