Roblox is shutting down its video chat service

Roblox has announced the discontinuation of Roblox Connect, its video chat service that launched in 2023. The feature enabled users to communicate via video while controlling customized Roblox avatars that could mimic real-world movements and expressions, creating an immersive social experience within shared virtual environments.

According to Roblox, the decision stems from observed usage patterns across the platform. Users aged 13 and older predominantly rely on the platform’s party voice chat functionality for their communication needs rather than utilizing the more feature-rich video chat service. This preference indicates that the traditional voice-only option better aligns with user expectations and engagement patterns.

The shutdown encompasses both the consumer-facing Roblox Connect feature and its developer-facing APIs, signaling a complete discontinuation rather than a gradual phase-out. While Roblox Connect was positioned as an innovative social feature combining avatar-based interaction with video communication, the platform’s shift in user preferences has prompted the company to redirect resources elsewhere.
