Dead Space series co-creator and industry veteran Glen Schofield announces his retirement in emotional video

Glen Schofield, a veteran game developer with over 35 years in the industry, has announced his retirement through an emotional LinkedIn video. He’s ending his day-to-day involvement in game development, marking the conclusion of a storied career that shaped several iconic franchises.

Schofield is best known as the co-creator of the Dead Space series with EA and as a key figure at Sledgehammer Games, where he served as co-director. During his tenure with Activision, he contributed to multiple Call of Duty titles, including Modern Warfare 3, Advanced Warfare, and WWII. He also served as general manager of Visceral Games. His final project was The Callisto Protocol, released in 2022.

In his retirement announcement, Schofield reflected positively on his career, describing “the past couple of decades” as “some of the greatest times in video games.” He praised the talent he worked with and noted that he “had a front row seat to one of the greatest creative explosions in history.”

The announcement included details about cancelled projects, notably a third-person Call of Duty game set in Vietnam that was in development for approximately six months at Activision. The project was ultimately shelved due to management hesitation, with Schofield explaining that “Vietnam was still an open wound in some people’s minds.”

Throughout his career, Schofield worked on diverse projects spanning from Disney-themed racing games to horror franchises and military shooters, accumulating extensive experience across multiple genres and major publishers. His departure represents the exit of a significant creative force from the video game industry.
