Shrek Plays Soccer Now, Sort Of

Characters from DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek franchise are now playable in FIFA Heroes, marking an unexpected crossover between the animated film series and the sports gaming world. The collaboration includes six characters: Shrek, Fiona, Puss in Boots, Gingy, Pinocchio, and Lord Farquaad. Players can now form lineups featuring these characters alongside traditional football players like Messi.

The Shrek characters will be available as part of the game’s new season pass, though their appearance will be temporary—limited until August 10. The addition coincides with the 25th anniversary of the original Shrek film, capitalizing on renewed interest in the beloved franchise.

This crossover comes shortly after FIFA Heroes’ launch on June 24, indicating the game is pursuing an aggressive content strategy with celebrity and media franchise partnerships. While most of the main Shrek cast is represented, fans will notably miss the opportunity to play as Donkey, the franchise’s popular comic relief character.

The timing aligns with broader Shrek franchise momentum, as DreamWorks Animation has announced Shrek 5 is in development for a June 2027 release. The inclusion of iconic characters demonstrates how FIFA Heroes is leveraging recognizable entertainment properties to attract players beyond traditional football game audiences.
