Surprise! Square Enix Has Released A Switch 2 Version Of Star Ocean: The Second Story R
Square Enix has released Star Ocean: The Second Story R on Nintendo Switch 2 as part of the Star Ocean franchise’s 30th anniversary celebration. The action RPG remake is now available on the Nintendo eShop for $49.99 across all regions.
Following the precedent set by other recent Square Enix releases like Octopath Traveler, the Switch 2 version of Star Ocean: The Second Story R does not include an upgrade pathway for players who already own the Nintendo Switch version of the game. This means players wishing to play on Switch 2 must purchase the game separately at full price. Additionally, save data will not carry over between the Switch and Switch 2 versions, preventing players from continuing their existing progress on the new hardware.
This release strategy reflects Square Enix’s broader approach to Nintendo Switch 2 ports, where separate purchases are required for new platform versions. While this practice is common among major publishers, the lack of upgrade options or save data transfer has become a notable consideration for players transitioning to Nintendo’s newer console.
