‘Unfortunately, Valve is just starting to sunset these parts’: Aftermarket battery replacements may soon be only option for LCD Steam Deck
Valve quickly clarified that it is not discontinuing replacement batteries for the original LCD Steam Deck model, which launched in 2022. Following reports from iFixIt that OEM battery stock was becoming unavailable, Valve confirmed that the parts will continue to be sourced through existing partners, with iFixIt receiving fresh stock within a week.
The clarification came after iFixIt initially responded to a customer inquiry about battery availability, stating it was looking “less and less likely” to receive additional OEM batteries for the aging handheld. This sparked concerns that the company was prematurely ending support for the four-year-old device, limiting repair options for users who would soon need to replace aging battery components.
Valve’s swift confirmation that battery replacements would remain available preserves the company’s reputation for supporting customer repairs and right-to-repair initiatives. The continued availability of OEM parts through iFixIt ensures that Steam Deck LCD owners can maintain their devices independently without relying on official repair services.
