Thief gets a mini-remaster ahead of its actual Nightdive remaster, courtesy of the GOG Preservation Program

Thief: The Dark Project, the legendary 1998 stealth game, is receiving renewed attention through two complementary preservation and modernization efforts. Developer Nightdive Studios announced a full remaster of the game at the PC Gaming Show, bringing modern display resolutions, controller support, and various quality-of-life improvements to attract contemporary audiences.

Concurrently, GOG (Good Old Games) has officially inducted Thief Gold into its Preservation Program, which represents the platform’s long-term commitment to maintaining classic games for lasting digital availability. The program is specifically designed to ensure these titles remain playable indefinitely, protecting them from potential loss or technological obsolescence.

This dual approach highlights the enduring legacy of Thief, which established foundational conventions for the stealth genre and continues to significantly influence modern game design. While Nightdive’s remaster modernizes the experience for current gaming standards and audiences, GOG’s preservation initiative safeguards the original game for archival purposes and players seeking the authentic classic experience.
