“We’ve seen how close you can get”: How studio closures pushed Suzerain’s maker to create two new DLCs and a turn-based strategy spinoff

Torpor Games, the developer behind strategy game Suzerain, announced three new projects today: two DLC expansions and a turn-based strategy spinoff. According to co-founder Ata Sergey Nowak, the studio’s recent expansion was driven partly by industry pressures, including the impact of studio closures on independent developers.

Nowak explained that historically, Torpor Games operated with a project-to-project financing model and limited staff, contributing to extended development timelines. The original Suzerain released to critical acclaim, but its first DLC arrived four years later due to these resource constraints. The newly announced content—two DLCs and a spinoff—will all launch before the studio’s next flagship title, The Conformist.

The announcements represent a significant shift in Torpor Games’ release strategy, moving from their traditional single-project focus to multiple concurrent titles. The move reflects both the studio’s growth and adaptation to an increasingly challenging industry landscape where independent developers face pressure from consolidation and studio closures. By diversifying their release pipeline and extending Suzerain’s life with additional content, Torpor Games appears to be building a more sustainable development model for long-term studio survival.
