UK union launches free resource to decode video game writing contracts
The Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (WGGB), a UK-based trade union representing writers across television, film, theatre, audio, books, poetry, comedy, animation, and video games, has launched a free “good practice guide” to help video game writers understand and navigate their contracts.
The guide addresses what the WGGB describes as an increasing problem in the industry: poor contractual practices affecting writers. By demystifying complex contract language and standards, the resource aims to empower writers to better understand their rights and obligations when entering agreements with game developers and publishers.
The WGGB’s membership includes both established professional writers and emerging talent, such as students and writers without professional credits. The union’s intervention reflects broader concerns about labor practices and contract fairness in the video game industry, which has faced criticism in recent years regarding working conditions and employment practices.
The initiative provides a concrete step toward standardizing better practices in game writing contracts and protecting writers from potentially exploitative terms.
