ZeniMax Online Studios Leadership Exits Amid XBOX Layoffs
ZeniMax Online Studios, developer of The Elder Scrolls Online, has undergone significant leadership departures as part of Microsoft’s latest Xbox restructuring. The studio has cut over 200 employees, including studio head Joe Burba, who had led the team since July 2025 and spent 14 years at the company. Also departing are Susan Kath (executive producer), Rich Lambert (game director), and Ala Diaz (production director). The cuts were documented in a WARN letter filed with Maryland, where the studio is based.
The Elder Scrolls Online, which launched in 2014, is a long-running MMO that relies on consistent updates and community engagement. The loss of multiple senior leadership figures raises concerns about the game’s future direction and development roadmap. In live-service games, experienced creative leadership is crucial for maintaining player trust and engagement through regular content updates.
These departures are part of a broader restructuring at Xbox, reflecting Microsoft’s ongoing strategic realignment of its gaming division. The timing and scale of the leadership exodus suggest potential shifts in how the studio will operate and prioritize development moving forward.
