Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Director Reveals Why Ubisoft Ditched Edward’s Hidden Blade Combat

Richard Knight, director of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, has explained Ubisoft’s decision to remove or significantly alter Edward Kenway’s hidden blade combat mechanics in the upcoming remaster. The change is part of a broader overhaul of the original game’s combat system, designed to make encounters more challenging and strategic.

The remaster introduces several key combat changes from the original release. Players will now see enemy health bars and defense bars, requiring them to break enemy defenses before dealing damage—a departure from the original’s more forgiving system. The reworked counter chain-kill mechanic, which previously allowed players to eliminate groups of enemies with minimal effort, has been redesigned to provide greater challenge and variety in combat encounters.

According to Knight, these modifications aim to improve the combat experience while maintaining the spirit of the original game. The original Black Flag featured an extensive weapon system, including muskets and hidden daggers, which players could employ tactically throughout missions. The remaster will maintain player choice in combat approaches, though the hidden blade mechanics specifically will operate differently than fans may remember.

Knight’s comments suggest that while the immediate remaster removes or reimagines these beloved mechanics, the developers remain open to potentially reintroducing hidden blade combat in future updates or versions, offering hope to devoted fans concerned about losing this iconic feature of the Assassin’s Creed series.
