“It has to make sense for the game” - EA sees a “huge opportunity” for in-game advertising “but it has to be done properly”

Electronic Arts has unveiled a new in-game advertising platform designed to integrate branded content directly into gameplay experiences. VP of advertising and sponsorship Alexander Dao emphasized that EA sees “a huge opportunity” in this space, but maintains that implementation must be carefully considered.

According to Dao, successful in-game advertising requires contextual relevance—it must “make sense for the game.” He noted that sports titles represent a particularly natural fit for advertising, as real-world sponsorships could enhance authenticity rather than disrupt immersion. The company wants to avoid missteps like placing incongruous brands into narrative-driven games (such as Nike space trainers in Mass Effect), which would “push the limit too far.”

A key aspect of EA’s strategy involves planning advertising integration during game development rather than retrofitting it afterward. Dao explained that designing ads into a game from inception “creates more flexibility in the types of brands that can come in and out,” resulting in a more organic experience.

This move reflects broader industry trends as studios seek new revenue streams amid economic pressures, alongside developments in AI and the decline of physical media. EA hopes its approach will establish a standardized framework for in-game advertising across the industry, encouraging other developers to adopt similar practices. While mobile gaming has long featured in-game ads, bringing this model to traditional console and PC experiences represents a significant shift in how players interact with commercial content—one that EA is positioning as a measured, contextually-aware evolution rather than aggressive monetization.
