“It’s not that we don’t care about PC” - Former Rockstar developer suggests why GTA 6 is only coming to consoles at launch

Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2024, with a PC release scheduled for later. Rockstar Games continues its established strategy of prioritizing console versions before porting to other platforms.

Former Rockstar producer John Ricchio explained the reasoning behind this approach in an interview with YouTuber KiwiTalkz, emphasizing that it isn’t a lack of PC focus but rather a technical optimization decision. The studio begins development with console hardware constraints and then expands to additional platforms.

According to Ricchio, “It’s always better to start with the constraints and then extend, because shrinking is a lot harder than extending. It’s way harder to make your game performant than it is to just be like ‘Oh, we’ve got extra room? Cool, we can deoptimize or make things more shiny.’”

This approach ensures optimal performance on consoles with limited resources. Starting with powerful PC systems and then scaling down often results in poorer console performance, whereas building efficiently for constrained hardware first allows developers to later enhance features and visuals for PC’s greater capabilities.

Rockstar has employed this strategy consistently across major releases including GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption, and Max Payne 3. The typical PC release window arrives several months after console launch, providing time for optimization and leveraging the platform’s hardware flexibility.
