Upcoming Souls-Like So Popular It Sells Out Of PS5 Preorders
The physical Revered Edition of upcoming Souls-like Mortal Shell 2 has sold out across retailers ahead of its August 20, 2026 launch on PS5. Developer Cold Symmetry and publisher Playstack announced on July 16 that demand for the PS5-exclusive physical edition “exceeded expectations,” quickly exhausting supply in many markets.
The premium Revered Edition includes the game on disc, a 100+ page softcover artbook, steelbook case, and fine art prints. Only the standard base version remains available in physical form across many regions, with the developer indicating additional stock before launch is extremely unlikely.
The sellout has become a focal point in an ongoing debate within gaming communities about game preservation and physical ownership. Fans are leveraging the story to argue against Sony’s decision to discontinue disc production for new PlayStation games beginning in 2028. Gamers have flooded PlayStation’s social media with messages urging Sony to reverse the policy, with the strong demand for Mortal Shell 2’s physical edition serving as evidence that consumer interest in physical media remains strong enough to warrant continued support.
