After 13 years, Path of Exile’s devs are finally ready to ditch one of its most iconic and frustrating mechanics
Path of Exile’s developers at Grinding Gear Games have announced plans to redesign one of the game’s most fundamental but frustrating mechanics after 13 years: the colored socket and skill gem system.
Since PoE’s release, players have customized characters not through traditional skill trees alone, but by acquiring skill gems and slotting them into colored sockets found on gear. The system requires gems to match socket colors—red, green, and blue—to function, forming the backbone of character builds and playstyle diversity.
While this socket system offers depth for experienced players, it has consistently frustrated newcomers and remained a persistent friction point throughout gameplay. New players often find themselves unable to equip desired skill gems because their current gear lacks matching socket colors, forcing workarounds or equipment substitution. This problem persists even for veteran players upgrading gear, as socket color compatibility frequently limits build options.
Recognizing these quality-of-life issues, Grinding Gear Games has determined that the 13-year-old mechanic finally warrants fundamental change. This represents a significant design shift for a system so core to PoE’s identity that its alteration could substantially reshape how players approach character building.
The redesign reflects developer acknowledgment that while the socket system provides customization depth, it creates an unnecessary barrier to entry and ongoing friction that outweighs its benefits. By addressing this long-standing pain point, the studio aims to streamline the new player experience and reduce gear-upgrade friction, while hopefully preserving the build diversity and complexity that veteran players value.
