Thief Gold with updated graphics and integrated modern controller support is the latest addition to GOG’s preservation program, ahead of Nightdive’s full remaster

GOG has released an updated version of Thief Gold, the Gold edition of the beloved classic stealth game Thief: The Dark Project. Released through GOG’s game preservation program, the updated version includes several modern enhancements to ensure the decades-old game runs smoothly on contemporary hardware.

The improvements include updated graphics and audio, integrated modern controller support, proper interface scaling, and optimized controls. The release also adds new localizations in German, French, and Polish, expanding accessibility for international players.

The game was selected for GOG’s preservation program through community voting by the store’s backers, establishing clear interest in maintaining this classic title. The reverse engineering team took on the project to bring the 1990s stealth game up to modern technical standards while preserving its original design and gameplay.

This update arrives ahead of Nightdive’s forthcoming full remaster of Thief, which will undertake more comprehensive modernization efforts. GOG’s preservation work serves as an important intermediate step, ensuring the original game remains accessible to contemporary players and preservationists while Nightdive develops their more extensive remake.
