Starfield “remains an important part of our future” says Bethesda, as developer pledges continued support for sci-fi RPG
Bethesda Game Studios has reassured players that Starfield will continue to receive long-term support, addressing concerns following significant layoffs at Xbox. Studio head Todd Howard confirmed that Starfield “remains an important part of our future,” despite Microsoft’s recent announcement of cuts affecting 1,600 staff immediately, with another 1,600 positions to follow during the current financial year.
The sci-fi RPG has exceeded player expectations since its September 2023 launch, with Bethesda reporting 17 million players who have collectively invested nearly a billion hours in the Settled Systems. More than 40% of players have already customized their experience through the game’s Creations system, demonstrating strong engagement with the title.
Looking ahead to Year 3, Bethesda plans to expand Starfield with new stories, targeted gameplay improvements, and additional updates. A significant addition will be new Starborn DLC scheduled for 2027, alongside efforts to enhance the Creations experience further. The announcement comes as part of a broader statement on Bethesda’s franchise strategy, which also prioritizes The Elder Scrolls 6 and positions Fallout 5 in pre-production.
The commitment to Starfield’s development contrasts with initial concerns that the space exploration RPG might be deprioritized in favor of the studio’s more established franchises. Bethesda’s explicit reassurance suggests the developer views the sci-fi title as a critical component of its long-term gaming portfolio.
