Florida man arrested for allegedly stealing over $200,000 in crypto using Steam game malware
Federal authorities have arrested 21-year-old Zyaire Wilkins of Florida on suspicion of orchestrating a cryptocurrency theft scheme using malware-infected games distributed on Steam.
According to the federal complaint, Wilkins and unnamed co-conspirators uploaded eight malware-laden games to the Steam platform over approximately nine months, from May 2024 to February 2026. The scheme successfully infected about 8,000 devices and compromised roughly 80 cryptocurrency wallets, resulting in thefts totaling over $220,000.
The operation represents a significant case of supply chain exploitation, weaponizing the trust users place in established gaming platforms. By disguising malicious code within seemingly legitimate game offerings on Steam, the perpetrators reached thousands of victims before being detected.
This incident underscores persistent security vulnerabilities in digital game distribution and the increasingly sophisticated tactics cybercriminals employ to target cryptocurrency holders. The use of gaming platforms as vectors for financial malware highlights the ongoing tension between platform accessibility and security, and the critical need for enhanced vetting procedures and user awareness.
