The live-action God of War TV series suffers a huge setback as Kratos actor is injured badly on set and needs to be recast

Amazon’s live-action God of War television adaptation has suffered a significant setback after lead actor Ryan Hurst sustained a serious injury on set. Hurst, cast in the role of Kratos in January 2026, tore his bicep while performing a stunt in late June during filming. Following surgery, medical professionals projected a recovery period of four to six months before he could return to full capability.

Given the lengthy recovery timeline and production schedule constraints, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios decided to recast the role rather than delay production into 2027. The production had been underway since late February 2026, with four episodes already completed before Hurst’s injury.

Prior to the incident, Hurst had undergone significant physical preparation for the role, gaining 40 pounds of muscle to embody the iconic Greek warrior. The completed episodes will reportedly need to be reshot with the new actor to maintain continuity.

Production is now paused with plans to resume in mid-October 2026. A casting search for Hurst’s replacement is expected to begin in August. The decision reflects the practical constraints of modern television production, where waiting for an actor’s recovery could significantly impact the show’s release timeline and production budget.
